San Francisco: a city of distinct neighborhoods
San Francisco is both a city and a county, so the next level of exploration here is the neighborhood rather than another city. Commercial streets, parks, hills and the waterfront give its districts different rhythms. Start with these area introductions; the linked visitor resources offer more detail while our dedicated neighborhood guides grow.

Mission District
Murals, restaurants and small shops make the Mission a place to explore at street level. Clarion and Balmy alleys bring public art into that experience. The district’s cultural life deserves its own attention rather than being reduced to a restaurant list.

North Beach
North Beach brings together Italian food traditions and the literary history of the Beats. Cafés and independent shops make it a different kind of outing from the nearby waterfront: a few blocks can offer several reasons to stop.

Richmond and Sunset districts
The Richmond and Sunset are separate neighborhoods on the city’s western side, with Golden Gate Park between them. Their commercial corridors and proximity to the Pacific make useful starting points for exploring beyond downtown. San Francisco’s Richmond District is not the East Bay city of Richmond.

Downtown and the waterfront
Downtown’s business streets and the Embarcadero offer another way into the city. The Ferry Building connects a food-shopping destination with the working waterfront; its farmers’ market gives the area a recurring gathering place beyond the weekday office rhythm.

A farmers’ market to explore
Ferry Plaza Farmers Market operates year-round at the Ferry Building, Embarcadero and Market Streets: Saturdays, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Farm products and prepared foods make this a useful waterfront stop, not just a landmark to photograph.
