Willard: A Berkeley Neighborhood Guide

Willard Park, at 2730 Hillegass Avenue, has a broad lawn, picnic areas, a playground and tennis courts. It offers room for an unprogrammed visit—bring something to read or have a picnic—as well as more active recreation.

The City's current listing also includes an all-electric clubhouse for recreation programs and community events. Court reservations and the clubhouse's current offerings are linked from the park page. This mix of open space and organized activity gives the neighborhood a gathering place beyond its commercial edges.

The neighborhood association's history of Willard Park describes residents' involvement in developing and later improving it. Its account traces the City's land purchases to 1957 and the park's dedication to 1971.

The association also describes the Friends of Willard Park, formed in 1990, working on the entrance, pathways, trees and playground. Features that can seem ordinary on a visit have a history of neighbors working to improve a shared place.

The Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association's study of Hillegass Court documents the area's early residential development, including brown-shingle houses and Craftsman interiors. Its example at 2821 Hillegass Avenue is a 1916 apartment building, adding another building type to the streetscape.

That is useful context for looking at the neighborhood from the sidewalk: the area is not one uniform collection of houses. This is architectural background from a 2008 historical article, not a claim of interior access, current condition or formal designation for every building.

At College and Derby, Berkeley Playhouse performs in the Julia Morgan Theater at 2640 College Avenue. The building began as a church designed by Morgan; its exposed wood structure is part of its architectural story. A performance offers a way to experience a historic building through its present use.

Farther south in the neighboring Elmwood commercial district, Rialto Cinemas Elmwood, at 2966 College Avenue near Ashby, provides another option for an evening out. Its current program includes films and special screenings. These College Avenue destinations extend an outing around Willard; they do not turn Elmwood into a second name for Willard. Showtimes and tickets belong with the operators.

Willard Pool is part of my childhood, not a swimming facility this guide recommends today. Berkeley's current aquatics page lists King and West Campus pools for current swimming information.
