What is Berkeley's Elmwood neighborhood like? Its residential setting meets a compact shopping and dining district around College and Ashby avenues. A burrito, a box of chocolates, a little browsing and a movie can each be a reason to come here. The appeal is in having those ordinary pleasures close together, rather than one attraction that defines the whole area.

The Elmwood merchants' association describes a district of independent shops and restaurants anchored by its theater. This guide focuses on that commercial center and its neighborhood setting; it does not treat College Avenue as another name for Telegraph or Willard.
Westin's perspective: familiar food in a neighborhood setting
Gordo's is one of my favorite stops in Elmwood. I like the combination here: a residential neighborhood with a retail strip worth spending time on, including places for a meal and smaller shops to browse. Casa de Chocolates is another place I would include in an introduction to the area. Those everyday stops are a big part of what I enjoy about Elmwood.
Gordo's on College Avenue
Gordo Taqueria, at 2989 College Avenue, serves burritos and tacos near the College-and-Ashby intersection. Its menu offers several fillings and bean choices without turning a meal into a formal occasion. It is one of the neighborhood's straightforward food stops, whether the rest of the visit involves a film or time in the shops.
Gordo's has a longer Bay Area history: the operator dates its first restaurant to Clement Street in San Francisco in 1977. That is the chain's origin, not an opening date for this College Avenue location.
Chocolate, donuts and ice cream around College and Ashby
Casa de Chocolates, at 2629 Ashby Avenue, brings chocolate and dessert-making to the corner's mix of businesses. Its own story describes a Latin American–inspired approach rooted in Mesoamerican chocolate traditions. It offers a different kind of browse from a conventional candy counter: chocolate is the focus, with the makers' cultural influences part of the shop's identity.
Nearby on Ashby, Dream Fluff Donuts is another small food stop. The district directory places it at 2637 Ashby Avenue. On College, Humphry Slocombe has its Berkeley scoop shop at 2948 College Avenue.
The point is the variety within a compact area: chocolates to take with you, a donut counter or an ice-cream stop can fit around the neighborhood's other shops. Current flavors, menus and opening hours belong with each operator.
A movie gives the evening an anchor
Rialto Cinemas Elmwood, at 2966 College Avenue, gives the district a cultural destination among the storefronts. Alongside its film listings, the theater offers special screenings, including programs devoted to art, music and theater on screen. Its calendar is useful even when you are looking for something beyond a standard movie release.

Keep exploring beyond the food counters
The merchants' directory also groups clothing, gift and specialty shops, so browsing need not begin and end with a meal. Its listings provide a way to find the businesses that match what you actually enjoy, rather than assuming every visitor wants the same set of stops.
